Comparing ebook reader Nook Simple Touch and NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I must confess my editor calls me “gadget gal”. I love gadgets. I especially like trying new ebook readers and Mac computers.
I use MAC and have been using many PC’s in the past. I use iPad, iPhone, and as well as a few ebook devices. I got AluraTek ereader first. Then I bought Sony ereader, (early model), I did not like splashing screen effect, I return it. Then I got Nook. It was OK, but I could not read anything in dim light. It was a bit disappointing. Mainly because I love reading in the bed. Well, I wanted back-lit lighting in the device. Apparently it took them to come up with glow light almost a year.

First of all I should make it clear that iPad is not a ereader, it is much more than that. It is heavy to hold it a long time. It is not practical to carry around like a small ereader. And reading long time using bright LCD lightning is not good for my eyes. It is very tiring. The weight and lighting is the biggest effect for reading time. Reading on the iPad is like crawling into bed with an encyclopedia! Not so much fun.

NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight and NOOK Simple Touch

For these reasons I bought NOOK Simple Touch a year ago, then recently I bought NOOK Simple Touch™ with GlowLight.
So I can actually compare two of them side by side.
It was a kind of annoying experience to buy the new Nook. I went Barnes and Noble several times. They had a display unit but not an actual product to buy. There was a piece of paper on the stand says, write your email, we will inform you. How strange marketing they were doing it. Even I asked a few sales people when the new product will arrive, they never gave me an straight answer. More like they mumble around: “Well, I do not know, sometimes it comes a few of them Tuesdays or Wednesdays.”
So I left my email address. Two weeks passed, out of blue Barnes and Noble called said that if I come pick it up today till 6pm, I would buy one, they would reserve it for me. They called at noon. So I felt a bit strange push to customer make a purchase in 6 hours. It was very different experience than buying iPad. In the you can order online which will ship it to your address as soon as available, or stop by any Apple store, they get your name, either buy there or make your purchase online too, free delivery. They were always quick and efficient.

Anyway, since I wanted a small device to read at night, which is not an iPhone, that is too small to read anything for me, I was willing to get Nook.
The new NOOK Simple Touch™ with GlowLight is slightly better than old Nook. Flashing screen is less. The page turn seems like a bit faster. The light actually helps to read in any dim environment. I use the light every day. I charge the Nook often I think because of the light, but that does not bother me at all. I am happy with well lit device. I did not like built-in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate® Dictionary much, but comes free, so I use it. There are better dictionaries out there, if you care the dictionary option then you should get Sony reader which comes with 2 English language dictionaries, including The New Oxford American Dictionary, Second Edition and Oxford Dictionary of English, Revised Edition and 10 built-in translation dictionaries.
