Milky kadayif dessert, in Turkish sütlü kadayıf tatlısı


1 Package kadayif ( 16 oz )
6 tbsp vegetable oil
1 lime juice ( optional )
1/2 cup cream cheese
1 lemon zest

5 cups milk
1 egg
4 tbsp corn starch
1 tsp Vanilla extract
1 + 1/3 cups granulated sugar

On top of Kadayıf:
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp crushed almonds
1 tbsp crushed walnuts
1/2 tbsp dark chocolate toppers
All these for decoration you may use any of them

How to make this dessert?
Use shredded ( kadayıf ) kataifi dough, defrosted the package before making this dessert.

What is Kadayıf?
in Turkish Kadayıf or in US often called Kataifi is very thin strands of partially cooked and dried wheat pastry. Usually kadayıf sold in 16 oz packages in grocery stores. Kadayıf pastry made into thin long thread-like strips you can buy at most Turkish grocery stores. Traditionally in Turkey Kadayıf served in a heavy syrupy. I prefer eating milky desserts, so I made my own recipe from kadayıf. It is much lighter eat.

Frying Version:
In a deep frying pan flake the kadayıf into small pieces. Add oil on top. Fry the shredded kadayıf pieces until golden. Sprinkle lemon zest and add lemon juice, mix them well. When the kadayıf turns into brown color, turn off the stove. Set the kadayıf aside.

Prepare Pudding:
In deep saucepan over medium heat, heat the milk. In a bowl, combine sugar, egg, cream cheese, cornstarch and vanilla extract. Pour into warm milk, a little at a time, stirring to dissolve. Continue to cook and stir until mixture thickens. Do not boil. Remove from heat, place in a large bowl beat the pudding with a mixer about 2 minutes. It makes the pudding a bit foamy.

Then pour the pudding on top of the kadayıf evenly. For decoration you can put crushed walnuts or almonds on top. Let the kadayıf absorb the pudding in 2 or 3 hours.

Bake version:
In a deep pot flake the kadayıf into small pieces. Pour oil all over, sprinkle lemon zest and lime juice.
Put shredded kadayıf into a greased glass tray 9 by 15 inch. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown, about 30 minutes. If you do not like frying the kadayıf, you may bake it.
